Between 2015-2018 I lost well over 100 pounds using a combination of exercise and by creating my own framework for eating and nutrition (based on a combination of intuitive eating, mindful eating, and a loose version of intermittent fasting) that was natural and felt-good for my body. Over the years of maintaining a 100-pound weight loss, I have learned so much about eating for your body’s unique needs and requirements and the degree to which food healing influences eating and weight loss. I now coach other women through my food freedom framework so that they too can take control of food, create a food and eating plan that is unique to their body, and take control of their weight loss journey.
Creating My Food Freedom Framework
The number one thing that helped me lose over 100 pounds and helps me to maintain my 100-pound weight loss to this day, was taking control of my food and eating habits. I completely changed my approach to food and eating and rejected everything I had ever been taught by diet culture. Something in me knew that diet culture was lying to me about how to lose weight (for good) and I was right. This realization came after trying a points-based diet program for the 3rd time. I was paying for the membership and was seeing very minimal results. I found the points system so difficult because I was always feeling like I needed to be strategic with my food to be able to eat what I wanted. I felt like I had to make either-or-type decisions. And I hated calculating points, logging food, and feeling like I was eating but somehow restricting at the same time. I just couldn’t believe that this was how people without weight or food issues ate on their own. Anyway, like every diet I tried, it was short-lived.
But this time I questioned EVERYTHING. Was the points-based system that was taught to me by that company really how people without food and weight issues ate?! Were they really doing all that points stuff naturally and internally?
It turns out the answer is no.
People don’t actually eat that way. The points system is a way of eating but it is not a natural way of eating. And eating any way other than what is natural for you won’t lead to long-term weight loss. So why are diet companies teaching people how to lose weight in a way that is unnatural?
Because that is how they make money.
If that points-based company had actually taught me how to lose weight and eat regularly, I wouldn’t need a monthly subscription. It was in the diet company’s best interest to only teach me a few skills (enough to have small results and to keep me hooked on my subscription) rather than to actually have me lose weight. If I lost weight and kept it off, they would lose money.
So, I threw out everything diet culture had ever taught me. I truly questioned everything. And through trial and error, experimenting with food, timing and more, I created my own natural framework for food healing and discovering your body’s unique eating plan.
And 6 years later, I’m still following my own food framework and continuing to easily maintain a 100-pound weight loss.
Nowadays, I teach other women how to find food freedom, create food healing in their lives, and take control of their weight loss journey.
