I’ve learned a lot of things over the years when it comes to setting and reaching fitness goals. Firstly, one of the biggest things I learned was that reaching my goals didn’t have to be difficult.
I struggled for many years to lose weight, and reach my health and fitness goals. Year after year I would fail no matter how hard I tried. But eventually, I did succeed! You can read my post about how I lost over 100 pounds here. And there were a few keys things I did that helped me to reach my goals

Get an accountability partner
One of the most important things I did on my journey to achieving my goals was to get an accountability partner. An accountability partner is someone who knows about your goals and dreams and cares about you achieving them. This person is going to hold you to your word and encourage you when the times get tough.
Your accountability partner doesn’t need to be on the same journey as you, however, it does help if they share similar goals or if they have experience in the area of your goal.
An accountability partner will hold you accountable. And having someone hold me accountable made the difference between me succeeding and reaching my goals vs failing again. My accountability partner pushed me to workout when I otherwise wouldn’t and checked in on my goals and progress.
Start a fitness goals journal
Keeping a fitness journal is another simple way to make real and meaningful progress towards your goals. When you keep a journal you are able to visually track your goals more carefully. It is also a space to journal your thoughts and emotions surrounding the actions you are taking towards your fitness goals.
A fitness journal will help you to be honest with yourself and your efforts. It will give a better understanding of what is and what is not working on your health journey. And lastly, tracking your efforts, actions, and progress will consistently push you forward and prevent you from sliding backward.
Instagram accountability account
One of the best things I did was to create an Instagram accountability account. Not only did publicly tracking my efforts and progress keep me inspired and motivated, but I also met an incredible online community. I learned that to be successful, I had to surround myself with like-minded people and Instagram provided that community.
It is important, however, to stay out of the comparison game. Comparing yourself and your journey to others will not help you reach your goals any quicker and it will rob you of the enjoyment of pursuing your dreams. Allow yourself to find camaraderie in the online space but keep the focus purely on yourself and what you’re doing.
Regular phone alarms
When you’re starting a new routine or habit, it can be easy to forget to add it to your day. Adding alarms on your phone with reminders is a great way to stay on track. There are lots of healthy reminders you can set for yourself that will help you to reach your goals:
- to drink water
- stand up from your desk
- go for a walk
- go to the gym / complete a workout
- sleep reminders
- vitamin reminders
- reminders to eat if you struggle to eat during the day
- meditate
Join an online challenge group or Bootcamp
Joining an online challenge group or Bootcamp is an excellent way to ensure you reach your fitness goals. They are great for both accountability and encouragement. Plus, it’s always helpful to be in a group with people who are experiencing similar challenges and struggles as you are.
In a challenge group of Bootcamp, everyone is working hard towards tangible goals. It’s an extremely motivating environment. And surrounding yourself with goal-getters will have you staying on track and reaching your goals too.
